Practical psychology for real life

With over 20 years’ experience, I bring together psychology, leadership insight and practical tools to help clients manage stress, build confidence and reconnect with who they are. I’ve worked with people at all stages of life - from high-performing professionals to those navigating personal change, and my approach is always grounded, focused and real.

This isn’t about digging forever or talking in circles. It’s about helping you understand what’s going on, what matters, and how to move forward with more clarity and confidence.

Hello, I’m John

I’ve always been drawn to how people perform under pressure – what holds them back, and what helps them move forward. My interest in psychology started in the world of elite sport, but over time I realised the same mental challenges show up in everyday life too – stress, doubt, burnout, feeling stuck or off-track.

Before becoming a psychologist, I spent years in leadership roles across business and education. I’ve worked with teams, taught performance psychology, and coached my own son as he competed in Paralympic sport. Through all of that, I kept coming back to the same thing – people need calm, real-world support to make sense of what they’re feeling and figure out what’s next.

Now in private practice, I work with adults and professionals who want to feel more in control – emotionally, mentally and practically. I don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. I’ll meet you where you are, and help you work through what’s getting in the way.

I’m a registered psychologist with a BSc, MA (Psych), and postgraduate qualifications in Sports & Performance Psychology. My approach is practical and evidence-based, drawing on methods like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Positive Psychology.

How I can support you

I offer practical, outcome-focused therapy for adults who want to feel more steady, capable and in control. My approach is grounded in evidence-based techniques, but always shaped by your goals, pace and lived experience.

I aim to create a space where you can be real, reflect without judgement, and work through what’s getting in the way – whether that’s stress, low mood, relationships, or just feeling off track. Sessions are available in person in South-East Melbourne or online, with or without a GP referral.

I work with people navigating:

  • Stress and burnout
  • Anxiety and overthinking
  • Low mood and lack of motivation
  • Relationship issues and communication breakdowns
  • Stress and burnout
  • Life changes and personal transitions
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Feeling stuck, flat or disconnected
  • Unhelpful thought patterns or coping habits

FAQs

It’s completely normal to have questions before starting therapy. Here are some of the things people often ask before we begin. If something’s still unclear or you’d like to talk it through, feel free to reach out.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is a chance to talk about what’s been going on and what you’d like to work toward. I’ll ask some questions to get a sense of your current situation, and we’ll discuss what support might look like. There’s no pressure to “have it all figured out” – we’ll take it at your pace however we’ll make some progress together.

Do you offer telehealth services?

Yes, absolutely. We offer flexible telehealth appointments via phone or video for clients across Australia. This is a great option if you’re located outside Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, have a busy schedule, or simply prefer the comfort of your own space. You’ll receive the same level of care and support as you would in person.

What are the fees?

A single fee of $230 for a 50 minute session (a rebate of $98.95 will apply with a valid GP referral).

I value your time and mine, and a full session fee will apply for a cancellation less than 48 hours prior.

Do I need a referral or a mental health plan?

No, you don’t need a referral to book an appointment. If you do have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, we can discuss how that will apply. But you're welcome to start therapy without one.

Is this the right fit for me if I’m not in crisis?

Absolutely. Many of the people I work with are functioning well in some areas of life but feel stuck, flat or overwhelmed in others. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from support.

What kinds of issues do people usually bring to therapy?

People come in for all sorts of reasons – stress, anxiety, relationship tension, feeling stuck, or just not feeling like themselves. Some are dealing with a specific change or challenge, while others are looking to make sense of long-term patterns.

Step into your Executive Performance Zone Program

The Executive Performance Zone is a structured, one-to-one coaching process designed for business owners and professionals who need a clear head, steady direction and personal accountability.

Together we will identify which drivers of performance in each major life dimension (Business, Relationships, Self Identity) are limiting your ability to be in a state of flow.

It blends psychology, leadership experience and practical tools to help you navigate pressure, manage people, and make decisions that actually stick. Using my EntrePerformance Zone Assessment, Executive Focus Dashboard, and Performance & ROI Plan, we’ll pinpoint what’s working, what’s not, and where to focus next.

This isn’t generic coaching. It’s confidential, grounded support to help you feel more capable – at work, at home, and in yourself.
